If a system is not properly installed, used and maintained, serious injuries or death can result. In March of 2000, important industry safety standards came into effect to help insure that gate operators are designed, manufactured and installed in a safe manner.

In addition to the safety standard for gate operators, ASTM F2200-02, Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction, was published in September 2002. This safety standard provides design specifications to insure that the gate itself meets certain safety criteria.
