Landscape Forms launches a new collection of outdoor seating by three distinguished design professionals | Mar 8, 2006 |
Kalamazoo, MI Landscape Forms is pleased to introduce The Landmark Collection: three distinct groups of outdoor commercial seating and accessories, designed by three distinguished design professionals, and inspired by familiar themes in architecture, nature and historic design. Margaret McCurrys Lakeside, John Rizzis Parc Vue, and Brian Kanes Towne Square evoke other places and times with vernacular and classic designs. At the same time, they are smartly original in form and spirit, and up-to-the-minute in their use of materials and technology.

Architect McCurrys inspiration for Lakeside came from the homesteads and landscapes of the small towns and waterside communities for which she has created award-winning architecture. Two benches share a formed steel frame reminiscent of the traditional front porch platform swing. In the staggered picket version, McCurry transforms a common backyard staple into uncommon bench seats and backs. Landscape Forms offers these whimsical pickets in natural wood and high-tech polysite. The grass and leaf versions render laser-cut motifs from nature onto painted sheet metal. Grass sprouts and grows into graceful fronds. Leaves fall and scatter in apparent random. The plasma-cutting technology that makes this possible can also be used to create custom patterns for special orders. In addition to benches, Lakeside includes litter receptacles designed as simple cylinders, and offered in plain painted metal or with cut patterns that compliment the seating.
Designer John Rizzi took his inspiration from traditional cast iron furniture and organic, asymmetric patterns in nature. Parc Vue recalls the classic Parisian park bench with a sensibility thats au courant. The plasma-cut steel frame, in lieu of cast iron, has curves without curlicues. Parc Vue balances the dynamic gesture of sculptural form with the linear order of slatted seats and backs. It imparts a sense of lightness, openness and energy. Parch Vues companion litter receptacle references the classic wire mesh basket in an up-to-date cut steel cage with graceful urn-shaped liner. It is an elegant utilitarian object for use in urban environments.
Designer Brian Kane found the familiar in forms from interior furniture. In Towne Square he marries the welcoming gesture of a roll back sofa and the comfort of gently curved seats with a variation on classic metal strap construction. Plasma-cutting technology is used to cut the slatted detail in the bench seat and back from a single sheet of steel. Kane calls the process craft through technology. The result is a bench that recalls tradition but is fresh in its visual appeal. Towne Squares tubular steel frames give the seating a fluid profile. Optional perforated steel seats lend the bench a more contemporary character.
