Chicago Metallic Announces 2006 Ceiling Innovation Award Winners |
Chicago Metallic Corporation has announced the winners of the 2006 Ceiling Innovation Awards for Design Excellence. The 2006 winners are being recognized for their creative response to the design challenges of their clients while best satisfying the practical and aesthetic needs of the building space. The winning designs include healthcare facilities in Arkansas and Oregon as well as community and fitness buildings in Florida.

Grand Award Winner
Cromwell Architects Engineers, Little Rock, AR, represented by J. Brent Thompson, AIA, ACHA, has been awarded the Grand Prize for their work at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The winning design features Chicago Metallic's 6-inch Infinity™ Perimeter Trim in the newly renovated hospital lobby. The curved, sturdy aluminum trim was used to create abstract “clouds” that form a visual “ceiling” in an otherwise open, exposed structure space.
Two Gold Award Winners
Burke, Hogue & Mills Associates, Inc., Lake Mary, FL, represented by Camala McCarter Hogue and Stephanie Esposito, submitted one of the two Gold-Award-winning entries. Burke, Hogue & Mills Associates were recognized for their design of two buildings in the North Naples (Florida) Recreation Park. The firm incorporated Chicago Metallic's One-Directional CurvGrid™ Curvilinear Ceiling system with perforated metal panels in the Exhibit Hall of the Park's Community Building and in the Recreation Building’s Fitness Room. The curved ceilings reflect the client's request for a design that "complements the Park's natural environment."
A second Gold Prize was awarded to Clark/Kjos Architects, represented by James T. Clark, Jr., of Portland, OR. Clark/Kjos transformed a defunct "big box" retail space into a freestanding health and wellness center. The Wellspring Medical Center includes 12 separate healthcare providers, yet the architect designed an environment that accommodates everyone.
