Installation & Use
Each Balmer VI gypsum product is shipped complete with its own detailed installation instructions. These products are installed using a gypsum adhesive and/or drywall screws through pre-drilled holes into wood blocking, studs, or joists. Balmer VI gypsum products are made of non-combustible, non-toxic glass reinforced gypsum (GRG).
Balmer VI moulded polyurethane products are easy to install and are available in an assortment of traditional styles. Each product is designed to give the appearance of plaster but at generally one-half the cost. In terms of cost and ease of use, our moulded polyurethane products compare favorably with wood.
Balmer VI polyurethane mouldings have many advantages over wood mouldings. To obtain the same depth and definition of enrichments these one piece products offer, several separate pieces of wood would be required. Polyurethane is impervious to moisture, so painted surfaces will not peel. Polyurethane will not rot, crack, decay or be subject to insect damage. Installation of polyurethane mouldings is easier and faster. No blocking or nailing strips are required.
Nevertheless, when installing polyurethane mouldings, treat them just as if they were wood. Pieces may be cut, drilled, nailed, and screwed just like wood. Nails and screws do not require pre-drilled holes. We recommend the use of trim head drywall screws as fasteners. They are self countersinking and leave a hole that is easy to fill.
The use of adhesive is optional. If adhesive is used, we recommend a premium paintable siliconized (or super latex) latex adhesive sealant. This will act as a bedding surface which will fill any gaps caused by the unevenness of walls or ceilings. The same material can be used to blend joints and edges.
A quality sandable, paintable, non-shrinking latex filler should be used to fill screw or nail holes.
Like wood, polyurethane is subject to dimensional changes with variations ion temperature and humidity. Mouldings should be stored in a cool, dry area. Ceiling mouldings and decorative moulding should be cut for length such that pieces fit tightly. Allow approximately ¼ (6 mm) extra length per section and spring pieces into place.
Ceiling Centers & Surface Mounted Domes
To mount a ceiling center or polyurethane surface mounted dome, apply a ¼ (6 mm) bead of adhesive to the perimeter of the back surface of the product. Press it into place and wipe off any excess adhesive with a clean damp cloth. Three trim head drywall screws should be used to fasten the center in place. The screws should be placed such that their recessed heads can be easily filled and blended to a smooth finish.
