Floor Notes
MINIMUM BEARING LENGTH
- 1 3/4" is required at joist ends; 3 1/2" at intermediate supports.
NAILING OF SHEATHING TO TOP FLANGE
- Space 8d, 10d and 12d box nails and 8d common nails no closer than 2" o.c. per row; space 10d and 12d common nails no closer than 3".
- Maximum spacing of nails is 18" o.c. for BCI 40s Series, BCI 45s Series joists and 24" o.c. for BCI 60s Series joists. If more than one row of nails is used, the rows must be offset at least 1/2". 14-gauge staples may be substituted for 8d nails if the staples penetrate the BCI Joist at least 1".
NAILING REQUIREMENTS
- Nail BCI Rim, Blocking or Rim Board to bearing plate with 8d nails at 6" o.c. When used for shear transfer, nail to the bearing plate with the same nailing as the plywood shear schedule. Nail joists at bearings with two 8d nails, using one on each side, placed 1 1/2" minimum from the end to avoid splitting.
- Nail BCI 40s, BCI 45s rim Joist, or Rim Board to BCI Joist with two 8d box nails, one each at top and bottom flange. For BCI 60s series rim joist, use 16d box nails.
BACKER AND FILLER BLOCKS
- BCI 40s Series: 1/2" plywood backer block, 2 pieces 1/2" plywood filler block.
- BCI 45s Series: 5/8" plywood backer block, 2x6 filler block.
- BCI 60s Series: 2 pieces 1/2" plywood backer block, 2x8 + 1/2" plywood filler block.
WEB STIFFENER REQUIREMENTS
- Web stiffeners are always required for BCI's used in hangers that do not extend up to the top flange of the joist.
- Web stiffeners for 9 1/2" through 16" BCI's are not required unless used in hangers that do not extend up to restrain the top flange of the BCI joist or as shown in roof details.
- See Web Stiffener Detail.
RIM JOISTS OR BLOCKING
- 2000 PLF vertical load transfer for each BCI blocking panel or rim joist.
- Where Rim Board is used, BCI Joist solid blocking is not required. Versa-Rim 98 will support 4000 PLF vertical load transfer. BC RimBoard will support 2750 PLF vertical load transfer.
