About Floor Performance

The performance of a floor is a matter of opinion, the "feel" that might be acceptable to one person may not be acceptable to another. Many factors affect the perceived performance of a floor system, some of them are:

  • The depth of the joist
  • Continuous or simple spans
  • Decking and flooring material
  • Gluing and nailing the decking
  • On-center spacing of the joist system
  • Sheet rock attached to underside of joist
  • Level bearings
  • Location of walls and furniture

To improve the performance of a floor system, a designer will frequently change the deflection criteria from L/360 to L/480 or higher. One way to accomplish this is by reducing the on-center spacing of the joist. The load capacity of the joist system will be increased but the "feel" of the floor system will not be significantly changed. The stiffness of a floor system is significantly increased and the vibration is reduced by increasing the joist depth. To illustrate this, see the three BCI span tables under Floor Framing.

BCI JOIST SPECIFICATION

SCOPE: This work includes the complete furnishing and installation of all BCI joists as shown on the drawings, herein specified and necessary to complete the work.

MATERIALS: The oriented strand board (OSB) web BCI joists are to be factory-manufactured with structural grade OSB, Versa-Lam lumber and waterproof-type adhesives, such as BCI joist manufactured by Boise Cascade Corporation.

The OSB webs are exterior grade, structural 1, grade-marked by an ICBO-recognized agency. Strand layers are installed with the grain oriented in the vertical direction of the joist. Panels are adhesive-joined to form a continuous web member. The web shall be machined and fit into a groove in the center of the wide face of the flange members so as to form a pressed glue joint at that junction.

DESIGN: The BCI joists shall be sized and detailed to fit the dimensions and loads indicated on the plans. All designs shall be in accordance with allowable values and section properties assigned and approved by the building code.

DRAWING: Additional drawings showing layout and detail necessary for determining fit and placement in the building are (are not) to be provided by the supplier.

FABRICATION: The BCI shall be manufactured in a plant approved for fabrication by the building code and under the supervision of a third party inspection agency.

STORAGE AND INSTALLATION: The BCI joists, if stored prior to erection, shall be stored in a vertical and level position and protected from the weather. They shall be handled with care so they are not damaged.

The BCI joists are to be installed in accordance with the plans and Boise Cascade's Installation Guide. Temporary construction loads which cause stresses beyond design limits are not permitted. Erection bracing shall be provided to keep the BCI joists straight and plumb as required and to assure adequate lateral support for the individual BCI joists and the entire system until the sheathing material has been applied.

CODES: The BCI joists shall have ICBO approval.
