Determining Correct Surface Preparation for your Installation

Wall Surface

Preparation Required

Rigid Backwall Plywood Paneling Wall Sheating Wallboard Cover sheathing with a weather resistant barrier, lap joints 4" shingle fashion. Then in accordance with a local building code, install lath or mesh using galvanized nails or staples 6" on center vertically and 16" on center horizontally, penetrating studs a minimum of 1". Stop lath 1" from finished edges. (Fig 1)
Open Studs Install paperbacked metal lath to studs using nails which penetrate a minimum of 1" at 4" on center. Apply 1/2" to 3/4" scratch coat and allow to dry 48 hours. (Fig2)
Concrete Masonry Stucco } Clean and Untreated No preparation needed.Examine newly poured concrete closely to ensure that its finished surface contains no release agents (form oil). If it does contain form oil, etch surface with muriatic acid, rinse throughly and/or score with a wire brush. (Fig.3)
Concrete Masonry Stucco } Sealed Dirty Painted Sandblast or waterblast to original surface (remove sandblasting dust by washing) or securely attach lath with concrete nails.
Metal Buildings Install paperbacked 3/8" rib expanded metal lath to metal cladding supports of 20 ga. to 12 ga. using United States Gypsum Company's "1-1/4" type S-12 Pancake Head Super-Tite" screws. Screws must penetrate 3/8" beyond the inside face 0f metal surface. Screws are to be installed on centers equal to 1 screw/sq ft. and shall not exceed 6" on center in one direction. Apply 1/2" to 3/4" scratch coat and allow to dry 48 hours. (Fig.4)
HEARTH SURFACE Non-Masonry Install a weather-resistant barrier, then apply metal lath. ( If complying to UL floor protectors listing, apply 1/2" scratch coat).
Concrete Masonry  } Clean and Untreated No preparation needed

Specification for Random Ashlar

  1. WORK INCLUDED The furnishing of all exterior and/or interior wall facing, (variety) as shown and indicated on the drawing.
  2. STONE Stone shall be (variety) produced by Buechel Stone Corporation as furnished by (dealer name).
  3. SETTING Stone shall be durable, not concave and free from cracks. Stone shall be jointed in mortar with no air pockets, and all joints shall be completely filled. Stone shall be laid free from mortars stains and kept clean. Should the stone become soiled, it shall be cleaned with a soft bristle brush and water (NO ACID). No stone work shall be set in a temperature lower than 30 degrees and rising.
  4. MORTAR Mortar shall be any patented non -staining mortar cement of neutral gray color or color as approved by the architect.
  5. JOINTING All joints shall be recessed, raked or brushed back at least one-half inch.
  6. PROTECTION The contractor shall be responsible for the protection of stone at all times from time of delivery on the job site until job completion.
  7. CLEANING At the completion of the stone work, all stone shall be washed thoroughly with a soft bristle brush and water. Then thoroughly rinsed with clean water.

          ABSOLUTELY NO ACID IS TO BE USED
