Beautifully built, the
McCray Mansion Inn in Kendallville, Ind. feels the effects of Radiance. |
Why not
" I read an article on the front page of the local
newspaper and thought I would give Radiance a shot, "Tim Kendrick says. "I have hot water heat that
gives off loads of radiant heat, as well as a slate roof that consistently lets in the
summer heat on the third floor. Since I'm in the engineering field, I understood the
technical explanations of why Radiance works."
The Kendricks recently applied the low-e wall finish in the
ballroom on the third floor of their bed and breakfast, as well as around the radiators to
help reflect the heat back in. Eventually, the interior walls and ceiling of the
entire third floor will be covered by Radiance in order to reduce the exorbitant amount of
heat that seeps through the slate roof.
"Our goal is to live on the third floor and have our
guests stay on the floors below", Tim Kendrick continues, "With only a window
air conditioner, we need to save on energy costs and stay comfortable."
Kendrick says that he was surprised by how well Radiance
went on the walls, an important factor when appearance is so vitally important.
"I've used a lot of junk, as well as high-quality
paints, and Radiance covered as well as the best I've used. We also have done some
technique painting and Radiance worked great and it looks wonderful."
A Wall Finish for All Seasons
 |
Jim Larson, Minneapolis
rental property owner, enjoys the look and feel of Radiance. |
In addition to wrenches, screwdrivers and hammers, many
property owners keep a considerable amount of aspirin on hand. Just ask Jim Larson,
who owns and manages dozens of properties across the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St.
Paul, Minn. Maintaining each apartment or condominium, coupled with energy bills
that can go through the roof, is enough to give any owner a headache.
Last year, Jim was introduced to a different type of pain
reliever: Radiance low-e wall finish.
"I saw a video on Radiance at a convention for
architects," Larson says. "I figured I should try it and see if it works.
I have a 1,500 square foot, second floor apartment with vaulted ceilings that doesn't keep
the heat out very well. I thought that would be a good place to test it."
Larson had a general contractor apply Radiance in his
apartment and he was pleased with the application of the wall finish, as well as how it
looked. He also noticed a difference in the way the apartment felt.
"Radiance has more body than other paints, but it
looks good on the walls," Larson says. "It also made the room feel more
comfortable."
And the energy savings have already paid off. Larson
expected to run his air conditioner at maximum bore last summer, but with Radiance he was
able to keep it set at about two-thirds power, even during the most sweltering days of
summer. In fact, most days Larson set his air conditioner at one-third power.
" I am pleased with the results," Larson
says. "If this continues to work out well, I definitely will put Radiance in
all of my rental properties."
