Catch Basin Erosion Barrier®
As Manufactured by Royal Anchor Systems, Inc.
Available in Manhole/Catch Basin Access Openings of 24", 27" and 2' x 3'
Product Description
The Catch Basin Erosion Barrier is made of polyethylene and is installed atop a manhole section for use as a temporary erosion control device. The barrier utilizes a filtration process to eliminate sediment and construction downtime after a rainfall. Perforations in the shroud can be covered with a filtration fabric to provide the highest level of erosion control. The barrier is produced with a rectangular or circular design to fit the appropriate structure access opening, thereby controlling the maximum water level build up in a street. A larger opening allows the water to flow freely into the storm sewer system once it has reached that level. The shroud utilizes the street as a sediment basin, providing for approximately one half foot to one foot of water depth storage, which helps debris settle before flowing into the storm sewer system. The overflow opening can be adjusted by installing additional adjusting rings beneath the shroud framework.
Practical Application
During the construction of utilities and streets, the current practice is to place a spacer material between a steel plate and the top of the inlet structure. Crushed rock is used to backfill around the steel plate, with the hope that this temporary barrier will help control erosion and stop debris from entering the storm sewer system. During rainfall events, the eroded sediment generally will clog the rock. This practice is ineffective, and will cause frequent street ponding or flooding. Another practice builds the casting to a level above the existing grade to create a sediment basin in the street. This does not create positive drainage of the runoff, but creates a standing pool which must be absorbed through natural ground filtration or evaporation. The barrier allows for positive percolation and emergency overflow around the inlet structure, eliminating the pooling of water.
