When Ray Fisher picked up a scrap piece of CORIAN®, he
saw the light. Fisher was sharing a workshop in New Jersey with a cabinetmaker who worked
with CORIAN. He picked up a 1/4"-thick (6.35 mm) piece of material and held it to the
light. He became fascinated by how CORIAN transmitted light.
"It had a neon glow of its own. Real soft. Unique. And when I routed into the material, the deeper I went the brighter the light got."
Today Fisher creates dramatic table lamps and wall sconces in his studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Each lamp is a one-of-a- kind work of art, often evoking the rugged beauty of a Southwestern vista.
Fisher and other designers are discovering that CORIAN is a natural for lighting applications, not only for its translucency but for its durability, repairability and workability. "All of my woodworking tools work on CORIAN, which is a real advantage. Once you polish it, it looks like alabaster. You cant get the same look or feeling with other materials."
Unlike glass, CORIAN can do double duty as both the
lens and structure of a lighting fixture. CORIAN also has excellent heat resistance and
its natural pigments will not fade with time or exposure to ultraviolet light. This offers
new design freedom for interior and exterior lighting. ![]()
