DESIGN CHALLENGE
... build a new multi-use facility with a minimal budget and schedule construction so
that vital operations could be maintained during demolition of existing facilities on the
same site.
Goodwill's old, inefficient 100,000 square foot facility spread over a three-block area.
New building objectives were established to provide a new image, expanded services and low
operating costs. This multi-use facility was to include retail, corporate offices,
training center for the disabled and recycling center, all under one roof.

DESIGN
SOLUTION
Facility ... 60,000 square foot single story
Construction ... Site-cast reinforced concrete tilt-up
Schedule ... 10 months
Building Cost ... $4.5 million ($75 per square foot)
Michael & Kuhns Architects creatively designed the modest,
Goodwill Headquarters with great attention to detail, effectively using materials, space,
light and achieving maximum energy efficiency within a tight budget and scheduling
restraints. Careful planning developed a fast paced, short time construction and
demolition schedule. The large footprint building is scaled to adapt gracefully with its
neighborhood surroundings, draw potential shoppers to its retail outlet and provide a
dignified presence for the Goodwill corporate offices and training center.
The result ... architectural
enhancements are inviting, the building has low maintenance costs coupled with
energy-efficiency. Retail sales have increased by 51% since the new building opened.
