Reinforcing Concrete Design in Architecture / Summer 96 - Page 4

Interior Detail

Whether in corridors or classrooms, the exposed
structure related to the flow and function of the space.

SPATIALLY-ENHANCED INTERIOR
By keeping concrete members exposed, significant cost savings along with key architectural effects were realized. Due to the relatively low floor-to-floor heights, ceilings were left exposed to give the sensation of greater heights. This was achieved using structural members in designs, like exposed joist and beams that intensify spatial impressions. The plasticity of concrete allowed this construction and provided nodal points for emphasis in the design.
