WORKING WITH CONCRETE CONTRACTORS
To promote craftsmanship and develop a team approach, the design team collaborates with
the contractor before building begins to convey the level of finish and quality expected.
Working together, Anshen + Allen, Ove Arup and contractors have created techniques that
enhance the design and building process. This teamwork stresses that good concrete
placement requires preparation including prescriptive specifications that keep variables
to a minimum. The proper construction technique used by contractors to place concrete for
an exposed finish or as an ornamental material is also essential.
KEY FUNDAMENTALS FOR EXPOSED CONCRETE
Concrete, forms and formliner materials are instrumental in perfecting architectural
concrete.
1. Adequate formwork preparation includes the proper selection of
form materials and final drawings.
2. Accuracy in form alignment and caulked and gasketed formwork prevents leakage that can
result in blemishes and inconsistencies.
3. Uniform concrete mixes and coloring agents, verified by by job-site test panels, are
necessary for a quality concrete finish.
4. Consistent placement is necessary to ensure even distribution of concrete.
5. Proper treatment of placed concrete and all curing procedures must be followed.
6. Finally, careful formwork removal eliminates the need for unsightly patch work.
