"the real architectural dynamic is the interior carrying
the exterior theme with the braces aesthetically, concrete creates a great deal of
consistency and sensitivity"
The Jury
This 7,800 square foot office building,
completed in December 1996, is a two story structure built for a cost of $400,000 on a
small 100' x 135' industrial parcel. Constructed to house its staff, K J McNitt
Construction also uses the structure to demonstrate their skill as a contractor, as well
as to illustrate how simple materials used in an interesting way can yield memorable
results.

Site cast, reinforced concrete was used for the structural framing
system floor slab and foundation. Exterior walls are reinforced tilt-up, load bearing
concrete panels. Panel thickness (actually "thinness") is illustrated with the
freestanding, vertically cantilevered west panel wall. Temporary exterior and interior
wall bracing, made of used, 4" O.D. oil field pipe, became a permanent design detail
of the structure.
Reinforced concrete was also selected to demonstrate that exterior
and interior walls can be a single material. A mix of concrete finishes illustrates how
architectural design can be greatly enhanced. Interior and exterior walls were lightly
sandblasted, the reception desk shows a smooth form finish and floor slabs are colored
concrete. In addition, plywood formed and unfinished concrete walls complete the showcase
of finishes.
