"well done concrete finish to the exterior wall, gives a very unusual
and attractive weathered quality"
The Jury
The 11,000 square foot headquarters of Boyd
Lighting is a two story building completely rehabilitated for $450,000. Included in this
space is a customer lighting showroom and gallery, as well as, the company's staff areas
for customer service, sales, marketing, accounting, purchasing, design. This multi-use
building represents an example of how existing concrete structures can be rehabilitated
using exciting, economical design concepts in concrete.
The existing facility was virtually reconstructed for seismic stability and
to maximize usable floor space. The concrete shell was redesigned for maximum flexibility
and to minimize light in the showroom. Four large window openings in the original facade
were filled with concrete and then punched with very small openings. These new window
openings transmit a small amount of light through cast blue glass squares. Large center
openings on the southern exposure were reused as windows to allow sunlight in and to
emphasize the central vertical space. Additional considerations included maximum openness
to allow interaction among employees between departments, while creating total privacy for
others.
