| Survivors of the Shoah Foundation
When Steven Spielberg launched his "Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation," his dream was to videotape testimonies from the world's remaining holocaust survivors - tens of thousands of interviews - in a project made urgent by the advancing age of the survivors. One of the many technical challenges Spielberg faced was the sheer volume of videotape involved. More than 100,000 hours of raw field tape had to be archived, copies, and digitally encoded for online and multimedia use. His goal: to create the largest multimedia videotape library of Holocaust testimonies ever recorded. Using current technology, it would have taken an estimated eight years just to make all the necessary copies from field master tapes. Shoah Foundation producers partnered with Electrosonic Systems to find a better answer. Electrosonic's engineers responded to the challenge with a unique system design that combined off-the-shelf video equipment and custom control software. The innovative solution meets the specifications of Shoah Foundation engineers for a video processing system capable of performing multiple simultaneous dubs, outputting a digital video MPEG stream, and communicating with the Foundation's huge database.
