Roof Coatings and Cements

GAF Weather Coat® Emulsion

DESCRIPTION: GAF Weather Coat® Emulsion is a fiber based asphalt clay emulsion roof coating that has been specially formulated to give excellent resistance to water. This product does not flow when applied in thick coatings and when dry will stay in place even when exposed to elevated temperatures. This property permits the use of a softer, more ductile type asphalt which is stable in a roof or weather coating. The advantages of a soft ductile asphalt in the composition is apparent in the product's ability to resist the effects of exposure to rain, sunlight, snow and heat, as well as, to abrasive industrial atmospheres. GAF Weather Coat® Emulsion has a semi-paste consistency which is easily brushed or spray applied. Since the asphalt is dispersed in water, no fire hazard is encountered in normal use, even in confined areas. The applied film breathes; it permits water-vapor to escape through the film and at the same time remains resistant to water. This characteristic is of particular value in preventing blistering of applied films.

USES: GAF Weather Coat® Emulsion is especially recommended over smooth surfaced asphalt built-up and modified bitumen membranes. Because of its toughness and abrasive resistance, it can be used as the final coating in cold process roof specifications, particularly on low slope roofs.

APPLICATION: Surfaces to be coated must be cleaned thoroughly of all scales, loose mortar, rust, dirt, oil, grease and all foreign matter using a wire brush, sand blast or other methods in keeping with good roofing practice. Dusty or porous masonry should be primed with GAF Asphalt/Concrete Primer and allowed to dry thoroughly before coating with emulsion. Likewise, old roofs and all metal should be primed prior to coating.

Material should be stirred in the container and applied by soft bristle brush or suitable spray equipment. Adequate protection for most surfaces is obtained by the use of not less than 3 gals. of GAF Weather Coat® Emulsion per 100 sq. ft. of surface area. GAF Weather Coat "sets" by dehydration. The rate of drying is dependent upon the thickness of application, temperature, humidity and rate of air movement. Product should not be applied when raining or when rain or frost is forecast within 24 hours. Apply when temperature is 50F and rising. NOTE: Keep from freezing.

GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating

DESCRIPTION: GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating is a highly reflective coating. It can reduce the surface temperature of a roof and thus retard the deterioration of the surface.

USES: GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating can be used to coat smooth surfaced asphalt built-up and modified bitumen membranes. GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating produces a bright aluminum roof surface which reflects damaging ultraviolet sunrays.

APPLICATIONS: Before applying to a dry surface, remove all loose dirt and debris from roof substrate. Wire brush and prime all rusted metal. Repair all broken or rotted spots. Existing smooth surfaced BUR and metal roofs should be primed with GAF Asphalt/Concrete Primer prior to application of Aluminum Roof coating. Allow primer to "cure" until dry prior to application of GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating.

Apply to dry surface only. Apply with good quality soft bristle brush, long-napped roller or commercial grade spray equipment. Apply liberally, brushing in one direction only. Do not lap. Over-brushing will interfere with leafing action of aluminum. GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating is applied at a rate of 1.5 to 2.0 gallons per 100 sq. ft. Application rate may vary according to the type, age and condition of the surface. For specific roof assembly coating recommendations, refer to the current GAFGLAS® Built-Up Roofing and RUBEROID® Application and Specifications Manuals. GAF Premium Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating must be mechanically mixed thoroughly before and during application.
