Installation Requirements

The first step in installing any of Garland's systems involves the preparation and cleaning of the substrate. All oil, grease and chemicals should be remove by scraping or washing with detergents prior to acid-etching, shot-blasting, sanding or buffing.

Shot-blasting is the preferred method of surface preparation. This method removes all surface laitance and contamination. It also opens the surface of the concrete allowing for deeper penetration of the primer creating a superior bond. Unlike alternative surface preparation methods, shot-blasting does not introduce moisture into the concrete. Moisture, especially hydrostatic pressure, has been proven to cause failure with polymer coatings and resurfacing. The surface profile generated with shot-blasting produces a higher bond strength initially and later allows recoating without further concrete surface preparation. Garland recommends aggressive shot-blasting for all resurfacing systems.

Sanding and buffing are sufficient preparation for previously coated areas. Acid-etching has been used successfully to prepare concrete surfaces for minimal to moderate foot traffic when coatings are being applied. When acid-etching is being performed, all surface laitance and other contaminants must be removed. After the acid solution has stopped foaming, power-washing is recommended to thoroughly rinse all salts and other residue from the etched floor. Allow the floor to dry before applying a primer. Consult Garland Floor Company for specific recommendations.
