STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE

The strength of laminated glass is governed by the type of glass used, the condition of the glass surfaces and edges, unit geometry support condition, and nature of loading. Monsanto's Research Department has demonstrated that the most common laminated glass products (same ply thickness, same glass type) will behave as if the unit is monolithic, except in two unusual loading situations:

1 .

When laminated glass temperatures are high (more than 120 degrees F) at the time the design wind occurs.

2.

When laminated glass at room temperature 75 degrees F) is loaded for long periods such as snow load conditions.

Laminated glass units fabricated with heatstrengthened and fully tempered glass are two and four times stronger respectively than units fabricated with annealed glass.

GLAZING INFORMATION

Glazing Practices: Good glazing practices, such as those recommended in the Flat Glass Marketing Association (FGMA) "Glazing Manual" and "Sealant Manual" ' should be followed when installing laminated glass. The weather seal should be tight. Water should not be allowed to collect in the glazing channel. Weep holes must be provided. Prolonged exposure of the laminate edge to moisture can result in cloudiness or delamination along the edge.

Exterior Glazing of Laminated Glass:

1.

Laminated glass edges must not be exposed to cleaners or solvents or have prolonged contact with water.

2.

Laminated glass edges must be set on neoprene setting blocks located at the quarter points.

3.

Polysulfide, silicone, butyl rubber or polyurethane based glazing sealants may be used. Solventless sealants show better compatibility, Oil base putty should not be used.

4.

Setting blocks and weep holes must be included when laminated glass is set in any glazing system.

5.

Butt glazing laminated glass requires special edge treatment.

Compatibility of Materials:

Verifying the chemical compatibility of various glazing materials with laminated glass is the responsibility of the glazier.

The following chart shows the glazing tolerances that generally are recommended by the manufacturers of laminated glass.
