Ceramic coated spandrel is not completely opaque and therefore does allow light
transmission. This can result in exterior appearance problems if light colored back up
material is used or if the thermal insulation has printing or logos on it. Thermal insulation,
if it is attached to the glass, should be fastened to the glass with a uniformly applied
adhesive. Insulation should be uniformly in contact with the glass or completely NOT in
contact with the glass since areas of contact will appear different than areas not in
contact with the glass. If insulation is not fastened directly to the spandrel glass, the
insulation should be dark and uniform in color.
Ceramic frit spandrel panels provide a wide diversity of colors which add distinctiveness
to any building facade.

Custom color matched spandrel can be provided to match a designer's own color
sample, subject to project size limitations. Because the spandrel color produced is
influenced by the color of the glass substrate, HGP recommends that the color sample be
provided on the specific glass substrate whenever possible. Exact color matches are the
most difficult with light pastel colors. Color variations between laboratory prepared
samples and production runs are closely monitored by us to keep the color variation to a
minimum.
Ceramic frit spandrel panel may be used in structural glazing applications without edge
deletion.
The fire fused ceramic coating is the most durable spandrel finish for glass. Each glass
panel starts with a sheet of high quality float glass. It is then flood-coated or screen
printed with ceramic frit. The ceramic coating consists of glass that is finely ground and
mixed with inorganic pigments to yield the desired color. After ceramic frit application, the
glass is heated to about 1150°F, which melts and fuses the frit to the glass surface -
producing a ceramic coating almost as hard and tough as the glass itself. Ceramic frit
spandrel glass is supplied as heat strengthened or fully tempered. |
