Opacifying Methods cont'd

OPACI COAT

Opaci-coat is a water-based silicone coating that is applied to the #2 surface of a glass substrate. This coating is available in virtually any color since it is applied after the glass has been heat treated. Standard architectural colors are as follows:

1. Harmony Bronze
2. Harmony Gray
3. Lava Bronze
4. Harmony Graylite #14
5. Black
6. Harmony Solex
7. Harmony Blue
8. White

Opaci-coat can be used on annealed glass for interior applications where the glass is not in direct sunlight.

THERMAL INSULATION

Ceramic frit spandrel is available with factory applied insulation for those applications where desired. HGP offers the following options:

1.

1/4" Spandrel with 1 " fiberglass and foil (optional flush edge or cutback 1 "). Fiberglass to be 3.0 lb density with aluminum foil vapor barrier (U value 0.23, R value 4.35)

2.

1/4" Spandrel with 2" fiberglass and foil (optional flush edge or cutback 1 "). Fiberglass to be minimum of 3.0 lb. density with aluminum foil vapor barrier (U value .11, R value 8.7).

3.

1/4" Spandrel with 11/16" perlite and 1/8" CAB (flush edge for rigid panel glazing) overall thickness nominal 1" (U value .27, R value 3.7)

4.

1/4" Spandrel with 3/4" Ultra R Polyisocyanurate rate Foam (U value. 15, R value 6.28). Also available with a 24 gauge galvanized steel backing.

Insulation can be cut back from the edge to allow glazing into conventional framing members.

HGP fiberglass and foil insulation is a semi-rigid resin bonded fiberglass insulation board with a scrim reinforced aluminum foil laminated to the inside surface with a fire retardant adhesive. Batt or blanket fiberglass insulation can slump and fall cohesively when adhered to glass if moisture is allowed to accumulate in the insulation. This failure can cause "hot spots" and mottling of the glass surface.

FALLOUT PROTECTION

In critical areas and on government projects which require compliance with GSA Specifications PBS 40885 and FCGS-08810, designers will specify scrim backing. Canadian Standard CAN 2-12.9-M76 also mandates scrim backing. The purpose of the scrim backing is to hold the pieces of a broken spandrel panel in place under light loads (4 psf) when tested to the GSA specifications. Scrim films are also required to meet the fallout resistance test as outlined in para 11.3 of ASTM C 1048.

The need for scrim originated with the rare occurrences of spontaneous breakage in tempered glass. This need has been significantly reduced through the use of heat strengthened glass with low levels (5000 - 7000 psi) of surface compression for spandrel panels. Heat strengthened spandrel glass Is unlikely to have spontaneous breakage. Even when broken from other causes the piecess from heat strengthened spandrel glass are large and tend to stay in the opening. Hence, the need for a retaining scrim backing is reduced. Scrim films are also made with dark colors to perform the opacification process at the same time as particle retention. Not ALL opacifying films will meet fallout resistant tests in ASTM C 1048. if this feature is required it must be specified.

HGP can furnish Polyester scrim certified to meet the fall out resistance test of ASTM C 1048.
