440 SOUND-A-SOTE
Sound control board

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
440 Sound-A-Sote is a high density fiberboard made for use as a noise deadening
component in building construction. It is insulating, moisture resistant and protected
against termites, rot and fungi.
USES, APPLICATIONS
440 Sound-A-Sote provides a means of deadening sound in any residential or
commercial building where control of noise is an important consideration. It is used
successfully in high and low-rise apartments, motels, schools, professional buildings,
convalescent homes, and single or multi-family housing. It is especially useful in room

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION DATA
440-Sound-A-Sote Wall Construction - (as tested for STC 50) Apply 440
Sound-A-Sote direct to conventional 2"x4" framing, 16" o.c. nail
Sound-A-Sote to each side of interior walls using 5d rosin coated nails. Space nails
1/2" from edges, 6" apart around panel edges and 12" apart on each stud in
panel field. Countersink all nails at least 1/16" below surface. Provide a gap of
1/8" between abutting edges, floor and ceiling. Stagger butt joints on opposite sides
of walls. Using a good grade drywall laminating compound and a notched trowel, apply a
6" wide strip down the vertical center of 5/8" thick Type X Gypsum Board and a
6" wide strip down each side, 2" away from edges. Apply the compound-coated
Gypsum Board direct to Sound-A-Sote. Avoid coinciding butt joints of Gypsum with
Sound-A-Sote joints. Secure Gypsum with double headed nails, or bracing, until
laminating compound sets, then remove. Tape and spackle Gypsum in conventional manner.
Refer to General instructions SS-8-211-5 and seal peripheries and apertures.
440 Sound-A-Sote Ceiling Construction - (as tested for
STC 45) Apply Sound-A-Sote to conventional 2"x8" or 10" joists,
16" o.c. Nail Sound-A-Sote to ceiling using 5d rosin coated nails, as described
for wall construction. Install Type X Gypsum Board to Sound-A-Sote using USG RC-1
Resilient Channels (or equal) spaced 24" o.c. Use nails of sufficient length to
penetrate 1/2" Sound-A-Sote and enter joists at least 3/4". Tape and
spackle all joints, and seal according to General Instructions SS-8-211-5.

440 Sound-A-Sote Floor Construction - (recommended for
INR + 10 est.) To conventional 2"x8" or 10" joists, 16" o.c., apply a
layer of 5/8" plywood according to good subfloor construction practice. Shim or sand
as required to assure a flat surface. Spread APA approved decking adhesive over plywood
subfloor and apply Sound-A-Sote. Provide a gap of 1/8" between all butt joints.
Avoid coinciding Sound-A-Sote joints with plywood joints. Nail all corners using 5d
rosin coated nails, countersunk at least 1/16" below surface. Apply a layer of
1/2" plywood to Sound-A-Sote using APA approved decking adhesive. Avoid
coinciding of plywood butt joints with Sound-A-Sote joints. Use 1 1/2", 8d
nails to secure all corners. Countersink 1/16" below plywood surface. Sand as
required to provide flat surface. Fill all peripheral voids, caulk and seal according to
General Instructions SS-8-211-5.
Consult Homasote Bulletin SS-8-211-5 for installation instructions.
