Products

3.1 Products

JM manufactures or supplies a complete line of products for use in installing built-up, modified bitumen, and single ply roofing systems. The products for these systems include the membrane materials, roof insulations, flashing materials, adhesives and roof accessories. The accessories include expansion joint covers, one-way roof vents, roof drains, fascia systems and insulation fasteners.

3.2 Physical Properties

The description of physical properties of JM roofing products in this manual represent typical, average values obtained by accepted test methods under controlled laboratory conditions and are not minimum standards. They vary in normal manufacture and are subject to change without notice. The fact that a designer’s specification includes a specific physical standard for materials specified, does not obligate JM to produce material to that standard, unless agreed to in advance by JM. It is the purchaser’s obligation to ensure that the materials purchased meet the physical properties of the materials specified.

3.3 Certification

If any components of the roofing system must be certified to a Federal or ASTM Specification, or must bear Underwriters Laboratories or Factory Mutual labels, JM must be advised when the materials are ordered. JM can then perform the tests necessary to certify that the materials meet the specifications, with or without certain exceptions.

3.4 Handling, Protection and Storage

3.4.1 JM supplies materials for roofing with the intent that they will be installed in a clean, dry and undamaged condition. The use of wet, dirty or damaged materials can contribute to failure of the roofing system. JM recommends that the user strictly adhere to the following guidelines for the handling, protection and storage of all material to be utilized in the roofing system.

A. Always store built-up and modified bitumen roll goods on end, and on a clean, raised platform, to keep the rolls round and the ends of the rolls free from foreign matter.

B. Always store all roofing, flashing and insulation materials in a dry place. Plastic covers, stretch wrap and shrink wrap are not intended for job storage. Moisture can condense on the inside of these covers and wet the products they are intended to protect. These materials are best protected by canvas tarpaulins.

C. Store all cartons of packaged asphalt on raised, level platforms and protect them from the elements with waterproof tarpaulins. Improper storage of packaged asphalt can result in contamination of the asphalt. Contamination of the asphalt can be a safety hazard if the asphalt contains small pockets of water when heated in the kettle. Contamination of asphalt can also affect the performance of the roofing system.

D. Store MBR Cement Activator in a heated area above 60°F (16°C). The MBR Cement Activator will reversibly crystallize at temperatures below this point. Use of the materials below this temperature is not recommended.

E. Store solvents and solvent containing materials in a cool, dry, fire-safe area.

F. Unload and handle all roofing materials with care. Dropping rolls, roof insulation, cans of adhesive, and roof accessories can damage these components sufficiently to cause unsatisfactory application and performance.

G. Notify JM immediately if materials are not received in satisfactory condition. Note any damage on the trucking firm’s bill of lading. Do not install materials that are not in satisfactory condition.

H. Keep the temperature of all roll goods above 40°F (4°C) for 24 hours prior to application. Modified bitumen products are considerably easier to install when maintained at temperatures above 50°F (10°C).

I. Securely cover, with tarpaulins, all roofing materials remaining on the roof at the end of the work day.

J. Observe all health, safety and environmental precautions involving the storage and handling of roofing materials as outlined on the container labels and MSDS. Refer to "Health and Safety" in the Introduction section of the current JM Commercial/Industrial Roofing Systems Manual.
