Applicable Standards
Nailboard meets ASTM C 1289 and the physical property
requirements of Federal Specification HH-I-1972/Gen and
HH-I-1972/2.
Factory Mutual and Underwriters Laboratories
Nailboard is approved for Factory Mutual Class 1-60 and 1-90
assemblies with BUR and single ply membrane systems.
Nailboard is approved and classified for use in specific
Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Class A constructions,
roof/ceiling hourly fire-rated assemblies, and insulated metal
deck assemblies. Nailboard also is classified by Underwriters
Laboratories Canada.
For current information on Johns Manville FM or UL approved
systems, contact a JM Technical Service Specialist, Sales
Representative or consult the current FM Approval Guide or UL
Roofing Materials and Systems Directory.
Other Approvals
Nailboard complies with CCMC 12786-R.
Nailboard incorporates APA Rated Exposure 1 OSB.
Nailboard meets California State Insulation Quality Standards
and Title 25 Foam Flammability Criteria. Nailboard also meets
the requirements of BOCA, ICBO, SBCCI and others.
Because this insulation complies with both FM 4450 and 4470,
when tested in roof membrane assemblies, and is listed as a
FM Class 1 roof insulation, there is no requirement for the "½"
(13 mm) gypsum wallboard or equivalent thermal barrier," when
applied in steel deck roofing applications to meet code
requirements (e.g., SBCCI, BOCA, ICBO, etc.). The local code
official does have final discretion for approval of roof
assemblies. Fire-rated roof/ceiling assemblies ("P" designs)
may require the use of a thermal barrier.
JM insulation products must be protected from open flame and
kept dry at all times. Install only as much insulation as can be
covered the same day by completed roof covering material.
JM will not be responsible for specific building and roof
design by others, for deficiencies in construction or
workmanship, for dangerous conditions on the job site or

as shown in this literature are intended to be used as general
guidelines only. Consult JM for detailed specifications.
