RECONSTRUCTION APPLICATIONS

HISTORIC RENOVATION

Catt Hall -- "Before"

Pella Corporation's Commercial Division staff partners with architects, contractors, owners and the local Pella distributor to create windows and doors that meet all requirements for historic accuracy while meeting contemporary standards of performance and energy efficiency.

Carrie Chapman Catt Hall is an excellent example of this collaborative relationship. Pella worked closely with architect Thomas Baldwin to create large, custom double hung windows, with wide-profile muntin bars, that replicated the look of the 1890-era originals. Pella also created custom, extruded brickmould to carry out the historic detail on upper floors, which feature low-maintenance clad windows (lower floor windows are all wood). "We felt Pella just had the quality," architect Baldwin comments. "They were able to produce the large wood windows that we wanted and to match the original profiles."

SUBFRAME INSTALLATIONS

In many renovation projects, a complete window tear-out isn't necessary. You can use one of Pella's subframe panning systems to cover the old frame and then install a new window in the subframe. In addition to providing significant savings on labor and - for multistory projects-scaffolding costs, our subframe system effectively minimizes building disruption.

Windows can be installed from inside the building. Pella offers both standard and custom subframe systems, which can be precut and notched before delivery to further reduce installation time.

COMPLETE TEAR-OUT INSTALLATIONS

When historic, aesthetic or structural considerations dictate a complete tear-out, we can provide custom-size window units to fit into existing masonry openings. The Pella Commercial Specialist works in close coordination with the architect and contractor to assure timely fulfillment of window and door orders, to keep projects on schedule and on budget.

Whether your restoration requires absolute authenticity or your goal is simply to capture the beauty and feeling of another era, Pella will help your achieve your objectives.

The restoration of the landmark Mahoning County Courthouse in Youngstown, Ohio, is a prime example of a full tear-out installation. Pella provided complete window units to fit into the original masonry openings.
