SLIDING DOORS

A "NEW" BUILDING WITH A LOT OF HISTORY

zpel025a.jpg (61260 bytes)
A diversity of roof lines and materials , plus the creative use of different types of Pella® Windows and Doors, gives Washington, D.C.'s The Lansburgh a compelling appearance.

Eight blocks from The White House, Graham Gund has combined new construction with the adaptive reuse of three structures - the former Lansburgh & Brother Department Store, a Kresge five-and-dime, and the Busch Building - to create a synergistic "new" residential building, The Lansburgh. In addition to 385 upscale apartments, The Lansburgh features street-level retail and an underground legitimate theater. Says Peter Madsen of Gunwyn Company, the project's developer, "The design concept was to create what appeared to be a series of residential buildings, side by side, to help break down the project's scale into smaller components - in the midst of all that federal architecture."

Each apartment facing the center courtyard has a Pella® Designer Series® sliding door opening onto a balcony. "It's been a very effective and workable product for us," Madsen comments. With Pella sliding doors and all of the Pella double-hung windows used throughout, The Lansburgh is not only a landmark property for our nation's capital; it's quite a showcase for Pella, too.
