UNIQUE APPLICATIONS A SCHOOL FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Design objectives for Worthington Kilbourne High School were developed during a broad-based "listening" process where educators, parents, students and others came together to define the "school for the 21st century." The resulting design goal was to create a building that makes a visual statement about the importance of education in the community. Architect Jim Schirtzinger's design for the 272,000 square-foot school and surrounding campus accomplishes that objective, and then some. The building is literally a bridge-the structure traverses a ravine -- providing an appropriate metaphor for high school's "educational bridge from childhood to adulthood." Schirtzinger chose residentially scaled Pella® Designer Series® casement windows -- with between-the-glass Slimshade® blinds -- to complement the sloped roofs, detailed brick and impressive building mass and create a compatible feeling with the surrounding residential area. The school's dramatic, forward-thinking design earned NBBJ the Honor Award from the local AIA chapter. |
