In a unique cooperative venture between
Consumers Gas, Hemingway's Restaurant of Toronto and Schwank Ltd., the new outdoor patio
heaters by Schwank proved to be a great success in keeping the patrons warm during cool
weather. The installation was economical and uses minimum fuel.
Mr. Martin McSkimming, owner of Hemingway's
Restaurant said that the heaters were installed during the first week of May, 1996, and by
August, the additional patio business had paid for the heaters and their installation.
He went on to say that on the Victoria Day
Monday in 1995, his patio business was so light he closed it at 9:00 pm. By comparison,
the Schwank heaters had increased business by over 150% for the same day this year.
Mr. McSkimming said that he had tried
heaters from other manufacturers on their patio before, but they did not give the heat
distribution he required. "With the Schwank heaters", he said "we provide
unobtrusive, true comfort to our patrons on cold evenings until early-morning
closing."
He said that the patio had become very
popular because the patrons always felt comfortable even if the weather changed. He also
said that he was particularly pleased with the level of comfort, especially since the
patio was located on a second floor and had no walls to protect it. He said "With
results like these, we decided to buy more Schwank heaters for our other patio."
Mr. Don Copithorn, Supervisor Food Service
Equipment, of Consumers Gas, Toronto, monitored the gas consumption separately for the
patio. He said that the Schwank heaters were amazingly efficient and the area was heated
with less than one-third the natural gas that conventional heaters would use.
He continued by saying, "With fewer
heaters and a smaller size of gas piping required, installation costs were also reduced,
resulting in faster pay-back."
