General Information - Ballasts

BALLASTS

FLUORESCENT
Most of our interior fixtures using compact fluorescent lamping are supplied with magnetic high power factor (HPF) ballasts that are "Class P" (thermally protected). These HPF ballasts are rated at 90% (or better) power factor and are encased and potted style.

Electronic Ballasts are standard for selected fixtures and are optional on all other fixtures. They are designated by the suffix "SSB" (Solid State Ballasts). Due to availability by lamp type and voltage we use several suppliers for electronic ballasts. All the electronic ballasts we supply meet the following minimum standards:
  • Flicker-free starts.
  • Class A sound rating
  • Power Factor >.98
  • Crest Factor <1.7
  • Harmonic Distortion <10%
  • End of Lamplife Circuitry

Dimming Ballasts are optional for many of our fixtures. We offer electronic dimming ballasts from several manufacturers, depending on lamping and fixture size. Some ballasts use proprietary controls or require "Control Interface" equipment. Compatibility of ballasts must be coordinated with the control equipment manufacturer. Prices vary accordingly, so check with your Rep for help with this option.

Please note that all electronic and dimming ballasts require 4-pin lamps.

EXTERIOR FLUORESCENT
Electronic ballasts are standard for all fixtures included in the Wall Mounted Exterior and Landscape Sections using compact fluorescent lamping. These ballasts are rated for outdoor use with a minimum temperature rating of -12° F (25° C), meeting performance requirements for all but the coldest climates.

Note that fixtures normally intended for interior use, but desired for damp location, do not come standard with electronic ballasts. For those fixtures we suggest specifying the optional electronic ballast.

HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE
For both high pressure sodium and metal halide lamps, standard ballasts are core and coil, high power factor (HPF). HPF ballasts are rated at 90% (or better) power factor. Metal halide ballasts are multi-tap for 120/277 volts, HPS are not. For HPS lamps minimum starting temperatures are -40° F (-40° C); for metal halide -20° F (-28° C).

Selected fixtures come standard with electronic ballasts for metal halide lamping. These fixtures are noted in the spec information. Electronic ballasts provide the following benefits for metal halide lamping:
  • High efficiency reduces energy costs.
  • Lamp wattage regulation provides rated lamp life with excellent color consistency.
  • Class A sound rating.

NOTE: See next page for Lamp and Base Cross Reference Guide.
Our fixtures are handcrafted here in the USA using the highest quality materials. As a member of FDI, we honor the integrity of product design.
