PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 SUBSTRATE EXAMINATION
- Examine substrates scheduled to receive coating system for
conditions that may adversely affect the work. Do not apply specified coating systems
until conditions are satisfactory.
- Verify the following:
- Retaining walls, planter walls, steps, and similar
construction elements have received waterproofing systems on backside of surfaces prior to
backfilling.
- Compatibility of joint sealants in surfaces to receive
traffic coating system.
3.02 SURFACE PREPARATION
- General: Perform surface preparation, including cleaning
procedures, pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions and as specified for
each particular substrate and coating condition.
- All surfaces must be sound and clean prior to coating system
application. Remove dust, dirt, mildew, incompatible release agents, form oils, floor
hardeners, loose substrate material, and similar surface contaminants.
- Completely remove existing painted surfaces exhibiting
loose, flaking, or oxidized paint. Use sandblasting, waterblasting, electric sanding, or
wire brushing for paint removal, and pursuant to coating manufacturer's published
instructions.
- Fill targe cracks, holes, and voids with cementitious
patching compound which utilizes a bonding agent such as "Tex-Bond".
- Fill cracks greater than 1/16 inch and less than 1/8 inch
with "Tex-Cote Flex Patch".
- Mask adjacent areas not scheduled to receive coating system.
- Metal Surfaces:
- Cleaning: Remove dust, dirt, rust, loose mill scale, paint
and other surface contaminants by wire brushing or light sandblasting.
- Degreasing: Use one of the specified agents for degreasing.
When solvents are used, rinse surfaces with clean solvents. For factory primed surfaces to
be degreased, use solvent types only as approved by coating manufacturer.
- Degreasing is required prior to surface etching.
- Acceptable degreasing agents:
- Toluene.
- Xylene.
- Tri-sodium Phosphate; 7 percent solution in water. a) Rinse
surface with clean water, then wipe off with a clean cloth.
- Vapor type solvent. Only for aluminum surfaces.
- Surface Etching: Following degreasing, apply
"Redi-Tex" Use applicators, dilution ratios, and procedures pursuant to coating
manufacturer's published instruction. Rinse etched surfaces with clean water.
- Avoid overspray onto metal surfaces not to receive
pedestrian traffic coating system materials.
- Coverage rates: 350 to 400 sq ft/gal.
3.03 MATERIAL PREPARATION
- Mix and prepare coating system materials pursuant to coating
manufacturer's published instructions.
- Store materials not in actual use in tightly covered
containers. Maintain containers used in storage, mixing, and application of coatings in a
clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue. Do not store in sunlight.
- Stir materials before application to produce a mixture of
uniform density, and stir as required during application. Do not stir surface film into
material. Remove film, and if necessary, strain material prior to use.
3.04 APPLICATION
- General: Apply coating system pursuant to coating
manufacturer's published instructions. Use applicators and techniques best suited for each
substrate and type of material applied.
- Primer Coats: Apply at coverage rates and allow curing times
pursuant to coating manufacturer's published instructions.
- Strata-Grip Base Coat:
- Roller application: Apply with fully loaded roller in one
coat. Trowel or rubber float finish to achieve desired texture.
- Coverage rates: 60 to 60 sq ft/gal, depending on surface
porosity and finish texture, for resultant 12.0 to 15.0 mils dry film thickness.
- Spray application: Apply at uniform pinhole-free continuous
film thickness over entire surface.
- Coverage rates: 60 to 80 sq ft/gal, depending on surface
porosity and finish texture, for resultant 12.0 to 15.0 mils dry film thickness.
- Maintain wet edge at all times to prevent lap marks.
- Avoid starting and stopping midway on substrate. Continue to
a natural break point.
- Cure Time(s):
- 24 hours for surfaces subject to light foot traffic only.
- 46 to 72 hours for surfaces subject to heavy foot traffic.
- Strata-Grip Top Coat:
- Allow basic coating to cure for minimum 24 hours prior to
top coating application.
- Roller application: Apply with fully loaded roller in one
coat.
- Coverage rate: 200 to 250 sq ft/gal.
- Spray application: Apply at uniform pinhole-free continuous
film thickness over entire surface.
- Coverage rate: 200 to 250 sq fl/gal.
3.05 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
- During course of work, remove discarded coating materials,
rubbish, can, rags and similar construction waste from the site at the end of each work
day.
- At end of each work day, flush equipment clean with water
for wet material removal, and MEK tor cured material.
- Upon completion of the coating work, clean window glass and
other coating-splattered surfaces. Protect work of other trades, whether to be coated or
not, against damage by coating and finishing work. Correct any damage by cleaning,
repairing, or replacing, and recoating, as acceptable to Architect.
