Self-Ignition Temperature
Approved materials shall have a self-ignition temperature of 650° Fahrenheit or greater
when tested according to ASTM D-1929.
ASTM D-1929
The self-ignition temperature of LEXAN polycarbonate is greater than 1000°F according to
ASTM D-1929.
Smoke tests* referenced by U.S. government agencies
NBS Smoke Chamber (NFPA #258)
Several governmental agencies are adopting the NBS Smoke Chamber and method of test to
measure the optical density of smoke evolved under both flaming and non-flaming
conditions.
LEXAN® polycarbonate complies with the following:
| Agency |
Application |
|
| H.E.W. |
Interior finish for hospitals and medical facilities |
| H.U.D |
Plastic bathroom tub and shower units |
| D.O.T |
Combustible materials used in transit systems |
| |
|
Maximum Optical Density |
|
| H.E.W. |
Average of flaming and non-flaming conditions must be
less than 450 |
| H.U.D |
Less than 450 under flaming conditions |
| D.O.T |
Under flaming and non-flaming conditions:
Less than 100 after 90 seconds
Less than 200 after 4 minutes |
|
| Results from small scale
Flammability Tests (e.g., Numerical Flame Spread Ratings) are not intended to reflect
hazards presented by this or any other material under actual fire conditions. |
