Installation Instructions for #11 Retrofit Snowguards
ALPINE SNOWGUARDS
A Division of Vermont Slate & Copper Services, Inc.
The layout is pictured below and is dictated horizontally by
joints in the roofing material.
Slide the sleeve to the bottom of the strap.
Slide the snowguard up between the rows of shingles so that
the snowguard strap is centered on the joint of the course of slate or shingles above. The
bottom 3-1/2" of the snowguard should remain exposed below the butt end of the third
course of slate or shingles. (See diagram below).
Fasten the snowguards by inserting the fasteners through the
snowguard strap, through the slate or shingle and into the room deck. It may be useful to
pry the shingles apart to have easier access to the snowguard strap below. (See diagram
below).
Fastener heads should be as flush with the snowguard strap
as possible (a nail set or flat head screw may need to be used) and covered with an
acceptable sealant.
Slide the counterflashing sleeve up into place over the
fastener heads so that the top of the sleeve is under the third course of shingles. The
sleeve is held in place by friction and the sealant used on the fastener heads. This will
counterflash the fastener holes and preserve the roof's integrity.

Snowguard Specifications for Slate and Shingle
Roofing
Left is the recommended layout pattern.
Vertical spacing between each row is 12" to 18"
depending on the exposure (i.e. 7 1/2" exposure would yield 15" vertical
spacing).
Horizontal spacing between each snowguard is 24"
maximum.
The first row of snowguards is placed on top of the third
course of roofing.
The three row layout pattern should be repeated every 15' up
the roof slope (i.e. Rafter length greater than 15' but less than 30' needs two 3 row
courses of snowguards).
