Installation Instructions for #20 and #50 Snowguards

ALPINE SNOWGUARDS

A Division of Vermont Slate & Copper Services, Inc.

  1. The layout is as pictured below.
  2. The third row of shingled roofing is fastened to the roof in the usual manner.
  3. The snowguard is hooked over the shingle, the proper horizontal spacing from the starting point (the gable for example) or previously installed snowguard. If you are using a rounded tile, the snowguard should rest in the valley, NOT on top of the hump.
  4. Two nails or screws of the same or compatible material as the snowguard are nailed or screwed through the two holes at the top of the strap and secured into the roof deck.
  5. Repeat these steps for the entire roof layout.
Snowguard Specifications for Slate, Tile and Shingle Roofing.
  • At left is the recommended layout pattern.
  • Vertical spacing between each row is 12" to 18" depending on the exposure (i.e. 7 1/2" exposure would yield a 15" vertical spacing).
  • Horizontal spacing is 24" o.c.
  • The first row of snowguards is placed on top of the third course of roofing.
  • The three row layout pattern should be repeated every 15' up the roof slope (i.e. Rafter length greater than 15' but less than 30' needs two 3 row courses of snowguards).
  • Manufacturer's recommended layout is highly recommended.

Alpine SnowGuards will recommend bracket spacing and layout patterns based upon the information you provide. However, weather conditions and roof construction vary from project to project. The owner or architect must carefully consider factors such as anticipated snow load, roof slope and orientation, roof construction and the area to be protected, in deciding whether the use of Alpine SnowGuards products would be appropriate. Alpine SnowGuards' assistance in your project design is limited exclusively to providing the specification of its products. The owner or architect is solely responsible for evaluating the structure to determine its capacity to bear retained snow leads.
