Wheatland electrical metallic tubing conforms to all provisions
of Underwriters Laboratories UL 797, American National Standard Institute C80.3, Federal
Specification WWC-563A and National Electrical Code Article 348. Those specifications
pertaining to qualities required in EMT are summarized here. For detailed specifications,
please refer to the respective documents.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Tubing
The tubing shall be straight, have a circular cross section
sufficiently accurate to accept approved couplings and fittings. Wall thickness shall be
uniform throughout and welding of seams shall be continuous and thoroughly done. The
interior surface shall be free from injurious defects.
Protective Coating
The tubing shall be cleaned so the protective coating will be firmly
adherent and smooth. The exterior surface shall be thoroughly coated with zinc applied
directly to the metal so galvanic protection against corrosion is achieved. The interior
surface may be zinc, enamel or other suitable corrosion-resistant coating. The zinc
coating shall be 0.0008 inches minimum. The interior and exterior coatings shall be
sufficiently elastic to
prevent flaking or cracking when a 1/2 inch tube is bent into a
semi-circle with an inner radius of 31/2 inches. The protective coating of zinc on a piece
of finished EMT shall not show a fixed deposit of copper after four one- minute immersions
in standard copper sulfate solution.
Identification
Each ten-foot length of tubing must be legibly marked as
"EMT" and with its manufacturer's name or trade mark. The letters
"EMT" shall be indented into the outer surface of the tube.
