3.0 DESCRIPTION

3.1 GENERAL

Willamette Industries, Inc., StrucJoist® Residential Joists are wood I-joists with wood flanges and a single web. GPI Joists, manufactured by Willamette Industries, are distributed by Georgia-Pacific Corporation and are manufactured to the same specifications and have the same design properties as StrucJoist® joists. The name GPI Joists is interchangeable with StrucJoist® throughout this report. StrucJoist® Residential Joists are manufactured in constant depths ranging from 9-1/4 to 16 inches. (235-406 mm) as indicated in Tables 2, 3 and 4 of this report. SJ-15, SJ-25. SJ-35 and SJ-55 Series Joists are manufactured with one of eight (8) different flange grades (AA, A, B, C, E, F, G and H). Each flange grade has different strength characteristics as indicated in Table 1 of this report. Flange grades are differentiated on each joist by the last letter of the joist designation. For example, a StrucJoist® Residential Joist labeled as SJ-15A would be an SJ-15 Series Joist with Grade A flange material.

3.2 MATERIALS

Flange material for StrucJoist© Residential Joists consists of eight (8) different grades of StrucLam laminated veneer lumber (LVL) composed of Douglas fir larch. Southern yellow pine or Western hemlock species. Flange sections are machine formed with a continuous tapered groove centered along the face, which accepts the web material.

Web material for StrucJoist® Residential Joists is oriented strand board complying with PS-2-92, Exposure 1. Structural I and StrucJoist® quality control requirements. The web of the SJ-55 Series Joists is 7/16 inches thick (11 mm). All other StrucJoist® Residential Joists have a web thick- ness of 3/8 inch (10 mm). The top and bottom of the web are tapered for insertion into the flanges. The ends of the web panel are also machine formed to allow for web-to-web V-joints.

Web-to-flange joints, and web-to-web joints, are manufactured with an exterior type adhesive complying with ASTM D2559, which is mixed and handled in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
