CAPACITIES

APA Performance Rated Rim Boards have the following design capacities(a):

Grade min(b) (in.) H(c)(lbf/ft) V(d)(lbf/ft) Z(e)(lbf) p(f)(lbf)

Depth (d) Limitation (in.)

  d<24 d<18 18<d<24 d<24 d<24
Rim Board 1 180 2,750 1,650 300 3,500
1-1/8 180 4,400 3,000 350 3,500
Rim Board Plus 1 N/A(9) N/A(g) N/A(g) N/A(g) N/A(g)
1-1/8 200 5,700 3,500 350 3,500

(a) These design values are applicable only to rim board applications in compliance with the connection requirements given in this document and should not be used in the design of a bending member, such as joist, header, rafter, or ledger. The design values are applicable to the normal load duration(10 years) for wood products, except for the horizontal load transfer capacity which is based on the short-term load duration (10 minutes). All values may be adjusted for other load durations in accordance with the applicable code.

(b) Minimum thickness for design capacities listed.

(c) The horizontal (shear) load transfer capacity.

(d) The bearing (vertical) load capacity. See Application Note I when used as starter joists.

(e) The lateral resistance of a 1/2-inch-diameter lag screw.

(f) The concentrated load capacity, which must be satisfied simultaneously with the bearing load capacity (V). See Application Note 5 for additional information.

(g) The minimum thickness for APA Rim Board Plus is 1 -1/8 inches.

Application Notes

I. APA Performance Rated Rim Boards used as starter joists - Rim boards can be installed in a direction not only perpendicular, but also parallel to the framing as starter joists. Design capacities of the rim boards are the same for both orientations with the exception that the vertical load capacity (V) should be reduced as follows unless the rim board (starter joist) is doubled or blocking panels are installed no more than 24 inches o.c. between the rim board (starter joist) and adjacent floor joist:

a) For 1-inch rim boards, use the bearing load capacity of 450 lbf/ft when the rim board depth is not greater than18 inches, or 750 lbf/ft when the rim board depth is greater than 18 inches but does not exceed 24 inches.

b) For 1-1/8-inch rim boards, use the bearing load capacity of 850 lbf/ft when the rim board depth is not greater than18 inches, or 750 lbf/ft when the rim board depth is greater than 18 inches but does not exceed 24 inches.

Note that some starter joists are installed at a non-load-bearing end wall. As a result, it is not always necessary use double rim boards or blocking panels for starter joists.

2. APA Performance Rated Rim Boards applied over opening - Rim boards are not intended for use as headers. Instead, use glulam, l-joist, or LVL headers.

Caution: APA Performance Rated Rim Boards should not he desired or used as a bending member, such as a joist, header, rafter, or ledger, and should be installed with full bearing along the entire length.

3. APA Performance Rated Rim Boards used as fire blocking panels - The minimum thickness of 1 inch for APA Performance Rated Rim Boards exceeds the minimum requirement of 23/32 inch published in the model building codes as long as the joints are backed by another APA rim board or a 23/32-inch structural-use panel.
