3.0 DESCRIPTION AND USE

3.1 GENERAL

StrucLam by Willamette Industries, Inc., is a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) designed for use as beams, joists, decking, rafters, truss chords and wood I-joist flanges. G-P Lam® is StrucLam which is distributed by Georgia-Pacific Corporation. G-P Lam has the same specifications and design properties, as StrucLam LVL.

StrucLam LVL is produced by laminating veneers of Douglas fir-larch, Southern Pine, or a combination of Douglas fir-larch and Hemlock veneers which comply with Willamette Industries. Inc., plant manufacturing standards and United States Voluntary Product Standard. PS 1-95. StrucLam LVL produced with Southern Pine or a combination of Douglas fir-larch and Hemlock veneers is limited to 1.8E, 1.9E and 2.0E grades. Various quantities, grades and thicknesses of veneers are oriented with the grain parallel to the length of the panel. Veneers are end-joined, as specified in the Manufacturing Standard. Veneers are bonded with exterior-type adhesives which comply with ASTM D 2559. StrucLam LVL is available in 2.2E, 2.0E, 1.9E and 1.8E grades, and in thicknesses of 3/4 to 3-1/2 inches (19.1 to 89 mm), widths of 1-1/2 to 48 inches (38 to 1219 mm), and lengths up to 80 feet (24 384 mm).

3.2 DESIGN AND ALLOWABLE STRESSES

3.2.1 General

Design provisions for StrucLam LVL not specifically covered by this report are outside the scope of this report, and shall be determined by the designer, subject to the approval of the Building Official, based on the principles set forth for the design of wood construction in the applicable code and the American Forest and Paper Association 1991 Edition of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (AFPA NDS-91), where applicable.

Allowable stresses provided in Table 1 of this report are for StrucLam LVL under dry conditions of use as defined in Condition of Use 7.6 of this report.

Allowable design capacities shall be adjusted for the appropriate duration of load factor in accordance with the applicable code for solid sawn lumber. Allowable shear, moment and stiffness (El) for 1-3/4-inch-thick 1.9E and 2.0E Grade StrucLam are shown in Table 2 of this report. See Table 3 of this report for the fastener schedule of headers and beams composed of 1-3/4-inch-wide StrucLam. See Table 4 of this report for bearing lengths of StrucLam beams. Allowable loads for common depths and applications of 1-3/4-inch-thick 1.9E and 2.0E Grade StrucLam are shown in Tables 5 and 6 of this report.

3.2.2 Fasteners

The fastener values, resulting from the provisions provided below, are permitted to be increased for duration of load in accordance with the applicable code.

Allowable lateral and withdrawal nail values, used for nails driven perpendicular to glue lines, shall be as provided for in the applicable code for solid-sawn lumber with a specific gravity of 0.50. Lateral and withdrawal nail values in the applicable code for species with a specific gravity of 0.46 shall be used for nails driven parallel to glue lines.

Nails installed parallel to the glue lines on the narrow face of the material shall be spaced at a minimum of 3 inches (76 mm) for 8d common nails. 4 inches (102 mm) for 10d and 12d common nails, and 8 inches (203 mm) for 16d common nails.

Design values for bolts used perpendicular to glue lines shall be as provided in the applicable code for solid-sawn lumber with a specific gravity of 0.50.

4.0 INSTALLATION

Construction documents and manufacturer's installation instructions for erection and installation of StrucLam laminated veneer lumber for each job shall be complied with, and a copy of these instructions shall be available at all times on the jobsite during installation.

5.0 IDENTIFICATION

The StrucLam and G-P Lam laminated veneer lumber shall be identified by marks containing the name of the manufacturer, the plant location, the product trade name and grade, the number of this report and the name of the quality control agency (APA-Engineered Wood Systems. NER - QA397).
