
FIELD FINISHING: DOORS
NOTE. Woodtech, Inc, is not responsible for the appearance
of field finished panels or doors. The following information is given to help the field
finisher with his responsibilities.
A. STORAGE AND HANDLING
1. Store flat on an even surface in a dry,
well-ventilated building. (Do not store directly on concrete.) Allow air circulation but
cover to keep clean. Do not store directly on concrete.
2. Avoid excessive moisture in building
such as wet plaster or wet cement, etc. where storing doors.
3. Relative humidity should not be less
than 30% or more than 60% in area where doors are stored. Doors should not be subjected to
sudden changes in temperature nor should they be subjected to abnormal heat, dryness, or
humidity.
4. Do not drag doors across one another or
other surfaces. Wear gloves or handle with clean hands to avoid smudging or staining.
B. PREPARATION
1. Make sure surface is clean and dry.
2. Sand with 3/0 or 5/0
sandpaper to remove any raised grain or handling marks. Sand with grain of the wood. Do
not use steel wool. Also remove any glue squeeze-out along tapeless splicer glue joints.
3. Clean surface with
tack rag or other means.
4. Since some veneers
react to certain finishes, it is a good idea to test surface with finish.
5. Apply finish as
soon as possible after properly preparing doors.
C. FINISHING (Interior)
1. Make sure that you use only high-grade finishing
material and follow exactly the manufacturer's instructions. Do not intermix materials
from different suppliers.
2. Apply seal coat to both faces and four
edges and allow to dry thoroughly. Sand lightly with 3/0 or 5/0 sandpaper. The seal coat
will allow uniform staining of the veneers when stained or when filler stain is required.
NOTE: THIS STEP IS NECESSARY TO PREVENT STREAKING OR BLOTCHING.
3. Apply one or more
coats of stain or filler stain as required. Allow to dry thoroughly.
4. Clean surface of all dirt and dust.
5. Apply two coats of finish for best
results. Allow to dry and sand between coats.
6. Apply finish to both faces and all four
edges of doors.
7. When applying oil
finishes only, use a minimum of two coats of the oil on the bare wood and sand between
coats.
