EVERLAST ROOFING SHAKES (continued)

2.3.5 Valleys, Hips and Ridges: Valleys are flashed with Type 30, 36-inch-wide (914 mm) underlayment installed beneath minimum 0.016-inch-thick [No. 28 galvanized sheet gage (0.41 mm)] galvanized sheet metal flashing, in addition to the underlayment required for general application of the products. Other conditions for wood shakes apply, as noted in Section 1508.5 of the code.  See Figures 2 and 3 for valley, hip and ridge flashings.

Hips and ridges are flashed with a double layer of Type 30 felt. At the bottom of hips and at both ends of ridges, two courses of 22-inch-long (559 mm), 11-inch-wide (279 mm) pre-formed hip and ridge panels are applied. The panels must extend no more than 1½ inches (38 mm) beyond the eave rakes. The second course, and succeeding courses, of hip and ridge panels are placed on the previous course with a maximum 10 inch (254 mm) exposure to the weather. Hip and ridge panels are attached with fasteners long enough to penetrate the sheathing at least ¾ inch (19.1 mm), or through the thickness of the sheathing, whichever is less.
