What is glass fiber reinforced concrete or “GFRC” ?

It’s one of the new “performance” concrete mixes. “Concrete” is no longer the concrete you used to know. The construction industry now creates concrete mixes specifically to “perform” certain functions. "GFRC" is just one such example. There are others: ultra-heavy, self-consolidating, lightweight, aerated-autoclaved, and so on.

Our focus is "GFRC" because it “performs” a wide range of decorative purposes on a (largely) self-supporting basis. That is, "GFRC" can support itself without outside strengthening in smaller pieces though it requires steel support for stability in larger, wind-exposed panels and for attachment of those panels to a building.

It performs under virtually any weather conditions and has been subjected to “accelerated aging” tests that put its life span at over 200 years – without significant degradation in surface color or texture or internal structural stability. When you think about it, this is not really surprising from a “mix design” comprised of Portland cement (a primary ingredient in ALL concrete mixes), a proprietary co-polymer (some would say “plastic”), very fine-grain sand and glass fibers averaging perhaps 1-1 ½ inches in length.

This mix design has made "GFRC" ideal for a range of decorative uses around the world.
