SHED, a market, café and community gathering space located in Healdsburg, California, has celebrated the land, farming, food, art and culture of Northern Sonoma County since it opened in April of 2013. Designed by Jensen Architects of San Francisco, the SHED architectural style is a combination of modern and traditional design, incorporating prototypical farm building forms to bring to life a vison held dear by SHED co-owners Cindy Daniel and Doug Lipton to create, “...a stronger connection to the land and the food we eat.”

As a 2014 James Beard Foundation award winner for ‘Outstanding Restaurant Design,’ SHED is a values-driven business emphasizing connection to community, stewardship of the land, creativity, curiosity and sustainability. The SHED café has an open kitchen, a coffee bar and a fermentation bar. Along with serving food, SHED also provides a wide variety of kitchen, farm and garden supplies in the Toolshed room. More than a restaurant and store, SHED is a place to learn and gather.

Central to the owners’ vision and the architectural program was a commitment to sustainability. SHED features a resource efficient prefabricated metal structure, thermally efficient insulated metal panel cladding, and a naturally ventilated and illuminated interior. Interior and exterior railings use CableRail stainless steel cables and fittings by Feeney, Inc., as the railing infill. The CableRail railing assemblies contribute to the overall sustainability of SHED because they are made with stainless steel containing pre- and post-consumer reclaimed material that is strong, yet lightweight; low-maintenance and recyclable.

Jensen architect Lincoln Lighthill said, "SHED was a labor of love for the client, something they had been dreaming about doing for many years. They came to Jensen Architects with a vision and a very clear program.”

Jensen Architects looked at many products as they endeavored to design the guardrail, initially considering a trellis-like arrangement that would enable them to mount plants on the guardrail. As the design developed, they realized they were really looking for transparency and openness at the guardrail, which they ultimately achieved with the use of Feeney’s CableRail products.

Feeney cable railing products employed at SHED include 1/8” diameter Standard CableRail Assemblies, with Threaded Terminal and special self-locking Quick-Connect® fittings for the horizontal cable runs and custom-made cable assemblies with Fixed Lock Toggle and Threaded Terminal fittings for the vertical cables. The horizontal and vertical cables are then tied together with Feeney Micro-Cross Clamps to create an open grid.

“The Feeney product was customizable, easy to install and heavy duty, and fit with our commitment to utilize sustainable materials. Using the Feeney Quick-Connect® system, the CableRail attachment was invisible and easy to install. The railing is a completely custom design utilizing galvanized steel flat bar,” said Lighthill. “Jensen Architects has used Feeney products on many different projects; we’re confident that Feeney will have the parts and pieces we need to do just about anything we'd like to do.”
