Florence Manufacturing employees recently combined their individual efforts and collected a total of 4,619 lbs. of non-perishable food items for a local food bank; making them the largest 2010 business contributor in the annual city-wide drive.
Throughout last month, Florence Manufacturing employees could be seen sneaking car loads of canned goods into the building, hoping to surprise other departmental groups and claim the weekly top prize. Bragging rights aside, this internal rivalry helped the company provide nearly one-third of the total food collected in the entire annual Project Manhattan Food Drive benefiting the Flint Hills Breadbasket.
Florence Manufacturing employees have a history of providing tremendous support to the local community in such recent causes as tornado relief and the annual United Way drive, and this food drive was no exception. In the current economy, though it may seem difficult to take from valuable resources to give to others, Florence proved once again that when individuals come together, they can all make a difference.
General Manager John Altstadt commented on the collaborative effort saying, “We have always believed that if each person contributes even a small amount, together we can make an impact. If you take on the mentality that one person can’t make a difference, you’re wrong. When several people come together, their small individual contributions combine to become a visible difference. Florence has shown this time and time again as our generous employees continue to band together in support of the local community.”
At last week’s Flint Hills Breadbasket annual meeting/award ceremony, Executive Director Natasha Phillips commented, “[This company] set the pace for the entire group during Project Manhattan. They came together as a business and offered incentives to employees in efforts to raise the most amount of food. They even had a competition between shifts to win an extra 30 minutes of lunch. The best part was that other businesses were calling in to see how much this group had collected so they could try to beat them every week! This was the first year that [Florence Manufacturing] has participated in Project Manhattan and they collected more food than any other participant, donating 4, 836 lbs. of food to the Breadbasket.”
Project Manhattan, a food and funds drive encouraging Manhattan businesses to compete against each other to collect non-perishable items, is held annually from May 1st to May 31st. The food collected is then distributed to local families, helping to provide food so that parents can put three meals a day on the table during the hard summer months when children are not in school. Florence Manufacturing was proud to be a part of this year’s campaign which raised a total of 13, 987 lbs. of food and an additional $3,471 in funds - proving that when lots of individual people give a little, all the small contributions become much bigger.
