Life safety systems in hospitals and health care facilities are not the same as those found in other building types. There are numerous systems to manage in the event of an emergency. With the permission of Engineered Systems magazine, we’re posting a two-part article written a few years ago by Mr. J. Patrick Banse, P.E. from Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) of Nashville. The author's information is still relevant today as he describes basic hospital system design and evolves the discussion into integrated systems and controls for these unique building types. Mr. Banse has over 30 years of experience in the design and construction industry and SSR provides consulting services for hospitals nationwide.
