Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is a green building certification system that is internationally recognized by building owners and operators as an outline that can be used to identify and implement realistic solutions for green building design, construction, operations and maintenance. LEED prerequisites must be met and points must be earned before a building can be LEED certified with the U.S. Green Building Council who oversees the entire process. Once the prerequisites and points are compiled, core credits may be earned which build the project towards higher levels of LEED certification. The four levels of LEED certification are “Certified”, “Silver”, “Gold” and “Platinum” and are awarded by earning 40%, 50% 60% and 80% of the core credits that are available at the time of certification under LEED.
