LIGHTGAUGE STEEL FRAMING

Use this guide specification to specify light gauge steel stud

framing systems. Review a copy of USG publication SA-923, and

UNIMAST publication UN 30 before editing specification.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 GENERAL DOCUMENTS:

General and Supplementary Conditions of Contract as well as

Drawings and general provisions of Contract and Division 1

Specification section, apply to work of this section.

1.02 DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Extent of steel stud framing is shown on drawings and

schedules. Included are "C" shaped steel studs,

miscellaneous track, channels, clips, bracing, bridging and

fasteners necessary for complete installation

Coordinate with all trades required to install work on or

into work of this section.

Fire-Resistance Rating: Where fire resistance rating is

required, provide materials and installation which are in

compliance with those of applicable assemblies tested per

ASTM E119 by fire testing laboratories acceptable to

authorities having jurisdiction.

Unit Responsibility: Obtain lightgage steel framing

materials including fasteners and related accessories from a

single manufacturer to ensure consistency in quality of

performance and appearance.

Performance:

Design wind loads shall be in accordance with applicable

building code or as shown on the drawings.

Design floor and roof loading, dead and live, shall be in

accordance with applicable building code or as shown on the

drawings. Maximum live load deflection of steel joists

shall be (L/360) ( "other").

Maximum allowable wall deflection under transverse loading

shall be (L/360) (L/600) ("other"), based on stud properties

only.

Maximum deflection is based on that allowable for the finish

material.

Designs shall include verification that allowable steel

stress and end reaction are not exceeded in conformance to

1986 AISI Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel

Structural Members.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product specifications

and installation instructions for systems used.

Certificates: Submit certification of compliance with fire

and sound requirements indicated.

Copies of actual fire and sound test reports can be specified for

submittal.

Samples: Furnish standard size sample of each linear or

continuous product, and one sample of all other components

required for project.

Delete "Samples" paragraph if none required.

*****************************************************************

Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for special components

and installations not fully dimensioned or detailed in the

Manufacturer's product data. Submit complete structural

calculations signed, sealed and dated by a registered

Professional Engineer indicating compliance with all

applicable local and state codes with certification that all

design loads have been accommodated for members and

components, for all conditions. Indicate design loads

required, member stresses, member deflection limitation, and

connection designs.

All welds, both shop and field, shall be indicated using AWS

"Welding Symbols, A2.0". Submit written description, as

required, to illustrate each welding procedure to be

performed in the work.

Placing Drawings: Submit placing drawings for framing

members showing size and gauge designations, number, type,

location and spacing. Indicate supplemental strapping,

bracing, splices, bridging, accessories and details required

for proper installation.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

Handling: Handle materials to avoid damage.

Delivery: Deliver materials to the jobsite in original

packages, containers, or bundles bearing the brand name and

manufacturer's identification.

Storage: Store materials in dry locations with adequate

ventilation, free from water, and in such a manner to permit

easy access for inspection and handling. Damaged materials

shall be removed from the job site. Store and maintain

welding electrodes in accordance with AWS "Code for Welding

in Building Construction, D1.0", latest edition.

1.06 PROJECT CONDITIONS:

Protect adjacent work of other trades from damage, physical

distress, etc.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURER:

Subject to compliance with requirements, provide lightgauge

steel framing, and all related components, as manufactured

by Unimast, Inc. and supplied by United States Gypsum Co.

2.02 MATERIALS:

Runner: (Select 1-1/4" leg CR-Runner to match stud

style. CR18 styles may be used with SJ16 and SJ14

studs.)

C. Finish: Provide galvanized finish to metal framing

components complying with ASTM A525 for a minimum G60

coating.


D. Fasteners:

Provide nuts, bolts washers, screws, and other

fasteners with corrosion resistant finish

Welding Electrodes: Comply with AWS Code.

2.03 FABRICATION:

Framing components may be prefabricated into assemblies

before erection. Fabricate panels plumb, square, true to

line, and braced against racking with joints welded.

Fabricate units in jig templates to hold members in proper

alignment and position and to assure consistent component

placement and full bearing at runner track.

Attach similar components by welding. Attach dissimilar

components by welding, bolting, or screw fasteners.

PART 3 EXECUTION:

3.01 PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE:

Prior to start of installation of lightgauge metal framing

systems, Contractor and sub-contractors shall meet at

project site with installers of related work including door

and window frames and mechanical and electrical work. Review

areas of potential interference and conflicts, and

coordinate layout and support provisions for interfacing

work.

3.02 RUNNER TRACK INSTALLATION:

Install continuous runner tracks sized to match studs. Align

tracks accurately to layout at base and tops of studs.

Secure tracks with suitable fasteners for the type of

construction involved spaced not more than (24") (20") (16")

(12") (8") o.c., as required by design to resist lateral

forces. Provide fasteners at corners and ends of tracks.

3.03 STUD ERECTION - WIND LOAD ONLY:

Studs shall be plumbed, aligned, and securely attached to

flanges of both top and bottom runners by welding or screw

fastening. Studs shall be one piece full length; splicing

is not permitted. Jack studs or cripples shall be installed

below window sills, above window and door heads, and

elsewhere to furnish supports, and shall be securely

attached to connecting members. Provisions for vertical

structural movement shall be provided where shown on the

drawings. Lateral bracing shall be provided by use of

gypsum board and gypsum sheathing and/or by horizontal

straps or cold-rolled channels securely fastened to the

studs.

3.04 STUD ERECTION - AXIAL LOAD BEARING:

Complete, uniform and level bearing support shall be

provided for the bottom runner. Studs shall be plumbed,

aligned, fully seated in the bottom runner, and securely

attached to flanges of both top and bottom runners by

welding or screw fastening. All studs should be aligned

vertically from floor to floor. Framing of wall openings

shall include headers and supporting studs as shown on

drawings.Temporary bracing shall be provided until erection

is completed. Resistance to bending and rotation about the

minor axis shall be provided by gypsum board and gypsum

sheathing and/or horizontal straps or cold-rolled cold-

rolled channels securely fastened to the studs. Diagonally

braced walls shall be provided at locations designated as

"shear walls" for frame stability and lateral load

resistance. Additional studs shall be positioned as

indicated on drawings to resist the vertical load

components. Splicing axially loaded studs is not permitted.

3.05 SUPPLEMENTARY PARTITION FRAMING:

Install supplementary framing, blocking and bracing in metal

framing system wherever partitions are indicated to support

fixtures, equipment, services, casework, heavy trim and

furnishings and similar work requiring attachment to the

partition.

Frame wall openings with proper framing to accommodate the

opening size and applied loads. Frame both sides of control

joints with separate studs

3.06 ERECTION - JOISTS:

Uniform and level joist bearing shall be provided at

foundation walls by means of shims and/or non-settling

grout. Locate joists directly over bearing studs or provide

a load distribution member at the top of the bearing wall.

Provide web stiffeners at reaction points and/or at points

of concentrated loads where indicated on the drawings.

Provide joist bridging where indicated on the drawings.

Provide end blocking where joist ends are not otherwise

restrained from rotation.

3.07 INSULATION:

Insulation equal to that specified in Section 07200 shall be

provided in all doubled jamb studs and headers not

accessible to insulation contractor.


3.08 FIELD PAINTING:

Where galvanized surfaces are damaged, prepare surfaces and

repair in accordance with procedures specified in ASTM A-

780.

3.09 CLEAN-UP:

At the completion of lightgage steel framing work remove all

related rubbish, excess material, scaffolding, tools and

equipment from the site.
