GENERAL

Excel Security Manager is a highly configurable security management system providing an efficient and reliable way of ensuring the security of people, assets, and property. It is a flexible and scaleable system able to integrate with a wide range of devices for security management, access control, surveillance, and safety management. Excel Security Manager provides guards, operators, supervisors, and managers with a sophisticated, Microsoft Windows� based, operator interface to enable personnel to monitor and control security and access at one or more sites.  Excel Security Manager runs on industry standard, Pentium� personal computers under the Microsoft Windows NT operating environment. Users can choose either Windows 95 or Windows NT as the client operator interface.  Excel Security Manager is flexible enough to adapt to a range of industries including large commercial buildings, industrial facilities, airports, university campuses, healthcare units, and government locations. It may be tailored to meet specialized industry requirements. For global companies, Excel Security Manager is the ideal system as the operator interface can be translated into the local language.

Excel Security Manager (XSM) provides an open system architecture which combines a variety of controllers, standard hardware devices, and communications interfaces into one, integrated, central system that maximizes performance for security management functions.

XSM can integrate the following building subsystems:

� Access control management system
� Security system
� Close circuit television (CCTV) system
� Fire monitoring system
� Ancillary control system

Components from the security and access control management systems can include:

� Operator stations for users (security guards and building management administrators)
� Card readers, electric strikes, door contacts, and drop in bolts
� Security control panels
� Passive infrared detectors and reed switches
� Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
� CCTV switchers
� Fire monitoring controllers

XSM supports local or remote equipment connection.  Electrical interfaces conform to EIA RS-422, RS-232, and/or RS-485 standards. XSM offers the flexibility to gather information from a wide range of industry sources and presents security data in a unified, consistent format.

System Architecture

The modular structure of Excel Security Manager provides a scaleable system which accommodates configurations ranging from a small single node system to a large system with multiple servers and stations. XSM is based on a client/server architecture.

The server or core computer environment is based on the industry standard Microsoft Windows NT (Ver. 4.0). It supports a multi-tasking multi-user environment, application software, TCP/IP networking, the XSM Graphic Display Builder Editor, and a real-time database which provides information to the client stations.

The environment for the client operator stations is based on Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT. They support application software, TCP/IP networking, and the XSM Graphic Display Builder Editor.

In a direct-connect configuration, the core computer is capable of supporting up to 16 serial operator stations. In a TCP/IP local area network (LAN) configuration, the core computer acts as the file server for displays and photo images and can support up to 40 operator station/peripheral connections to provide access for a limitless number of users on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Through the LAN, it is possible for a user at an operator station to use a consistent operator interface to accomplish the following tasks:

� configure hardware and software points for each panel from the core computer
� view custom displays and photo images from the core computer
� view, manipulate, and analyze data acquired from various panels
� monitor dynamic, real-time data from any panel type

The comprehensive networking capability of XSM, based on the industry standard TCP/IP protocol, allows communication to other XSM systems, PC networks, corporate management information systems, or enterprise systems via local and wide area networks.

An XSM applications launcher gives the user the capability to start any Windows application from within the XSM operator interface.

For system requiring superior integrity, XSM can be configured in a high availability architecture to operate in a fully redundant configuration. To achieve this level of reliability, the system runs a pair of core computers where one is the primary server and the other is the backup server. Also the system supports fully duplicated communications links to operator stations and field devices capable of this connection. An on-line database duplication mechanism ensures that the two core computers match. If the primary server encounters a problem, the standby server automatically assumes control within 40 seconds.

In critical situations, it is important to provide data to a user in a clear and concise format. The operator station is the tool which displays the XSM operator interface with high-resolution color graphics that are tailored to the requirements of each individual facility. Extensive use of industry-common pull-down menus, toolbars, and icons allow intuitive navigation and fast access to important security information. The operator interface is mouse driven and simultaneously supports keyboard data input to accommodate novice and experienced operators alike.   The operator interface allows a user to perform the following tasks:

� Display and control field equipment
� Display card details and point status
� Alter card access levels
� Define and alter time schedules
� Grant or deny access to assigned areas
� Initiate guard tour
� Acknowledge alarms on a priority basis
� Initiate printing of reports
� Archive and retrieve event logs
� Change own password
� Generate database and create color graphic displays
� Monitor data communications channels
� Configure system parameters
� Select and control cameras connected to CCTV switcher

Responding to alarms is crucial so a dedicated alarm line displays on every screen and indicates the most recent, highest priority unacknowledged alarm. Operator stations also display status information, including:

� Total number of all points of a certain type in a particular state
� Points in alarm pending acknowledgment
� Points in alarm which have been acknowledged
� Communication failures
� Operator stations and printers off-line
� Fire detection points status
� Guard tour status
� Deadman timer status

XSM provides standard displays to define, set up, and maintain the system assignments. Typical displays include:

� Master system menu
� Summaries for reports, alarms, events, access events, and displays
� Configuration screens for system parameters, operator stations, elevator access control, and point details
� Assignments for card holders, access levels, zones, areas, time periods, holidays, history data, and pushbuttons
� Definitions for operators and operator message boards

The core computer is capable of supporting multiple concurrent sessions that allow a user to choose between different operating modes such as:

� Master Operator Station Mode allows normal operator access to the XSM system
� Engineering and Maintenance Mode allows system configuration or application setup
� Graphics Builder Mode allows display construction using the Graphics Display Builder Editor in XSM

The operating modes can appear in separate windows and run simultaneously on one screen.

Users can create custom displays using the XSM Graphic Display Builder Editor to tailor the system to the facility layout. The graphics consist of static background areas with dynamically updated data which indicates the status and alarm condition of all security devices represented on the screen. In addition, the dynamic portions of the graphics can be defined to execute tasks and to call displays or reports. 

Video surveillance is essential for securing any facility. XSM can integrate live video into custom displays which provides operators with visual access to all locations in a facility. This capability enables one operator to view many parts of a building from a central location. It also allows remote verification of card holders against their stored photo image for authorized access to regulated areas.

When interfaced to a CCTV switcher, an operator can select and control PTZ cameras via the XSM operator interface or the numeric keypad. An operator can pan, tilt, zoom, or control iris for a particular camera by using keypad entries.

Basic Functionality

Subsystem Database Management
Excel Security Manager provides overall system management by interpreting diverse information from its field devices. For example:

� A cardholder automatically turns on lights as they enter an area of a building.
� A perimeter fence alarm triggers cameras to switch to the remote location.

All controller subsystems have distributed intelligence. The local panel determines normal access control decisions without input from the core computer. If the communications link between a subsystem and the core computer fails, the access control subsystem continues to buffer transactions and the elevator (lift) controller maintains its access time schedules. When the communications link is reestablished, the subsystems report back to the core computer and upload pertinent data. Changes in the core computer database are downloaded to the relevant subsystem controllers.

Time Schedules

A time scheduling function controls points on a periodic and on/off basis. The time schedules can be adjusted at an operator station. XSM provides the following types of time schedules:

� Once (executes one time and is then deleted)
� Daily (executes every day)
� Workday (executes Monday through Friday)
� Weekend (executes Saturday and Sunday)
� Holiday (executes on up to 30 user-defined holidays)
� Individual Days (executes on selected days)

Excel Security Manager can adjust the system time to accommodate daylight savings time. Users can preconfigure the system to automatically move the system time forward/backward one hour at a future date/time.

Event Initiated Programs
XSM allows physical and software outputs or groups of outputs to be assigned to an input point. When the input point changes state, its associated outputs activate as configured.
