Specification FE-2

Base Flashing

For load-bearing masonry parapet construction with no nailing facilities

General

This flashing specification is for use on masonry walls and parapets where no nailing facilities exist, and where the roof deck is supported by the wall or parapet.

Note: All general instructions contained in the current JM Commercial/Industrial Roofing Systems Manual shall be considered part of this specification.

Wall Preparation: Apply JM Concrete Primer to the masonry wall, to the full extent of the proposed flashing, and allow to dry thoroughly.

Materials

Five-Course Bestile Industrial Roof Cement Flashing: Approximately 100 square feet (9.3 m2) of flashing can be installed with the following materials:

FesCant Plus
Concrete Primer
GlasPly IV or GlasPly Premier
Bestile Industrial Roof Cement

as needed
1 gal. (3.8 liters)
208 sq. ft. (19.3 m2)
20 gals. (75.7 liters)*

* If the surface to which the Bestile Industrial Roof Cement is applied is unusually rough, up to 3 gals. (11.4 liters) additional may be required.

Application

Flashing Full Height of Parapet and Over the Top: The roofing membrane must extend to the top of the cant. The completed base flashing shall extend not less than 8" (203 mm) nor more than 24" (610 mm) above the level of the roof, and shall extend onto the roof membrane a minimum of 4" (102 mm).

Starting 3" (76 mm) from the outer edge of the parapet, spread a 1/8" (3 mm) thick layer of Bestile Industrial Roof Cement on the top of the parapet, down the inside face, across the cant, and 3" (76 mm) out onto the roof membrane. Embed a layer of GlasPly IV or GlasPly Premier into the Bestile Industrial Roof Cement. Lap the felt ends 4" (102 mm) and seal the lap with Bestile Industrial Roof Cement.

In a similar fashion, spread a second layer of Bestile Industrial Roof Cement, 1/8" (3 mm) thick, and embed a second layer of GlasPly IV or GlasPly Premier. This second layer should extend 1" (25 mm) beyond the first layer, at both the top and the bottom of the flashing.

Spread a final layer of Bestile Industrial Roof Cement, 1/8" (3 mm) thick, bringing it to a feather edge.

Surfacing (optional)

This detail may be finished with any approved JM roof coating, except hot asphalt, once the Bestile Industrial Roof Cement has been allowed to completely set up.

For a parapet wall having a flashing height in excess of 24" (610 mm), see Specification FE-15.
