Hartmann Brothers Company was founded in New York in 1897. Henry Koll, an employee and eventual president of the firm, developed and patented the "Koll Lock Joint," still an exclusive feature of the classically correct Hartmann-Sanders wood column.

At the turn of the century, Hartmann Brothers joined with the Henry Sanders Company of Chicago to supply the country with all-heart redwood columns and a variety of architectural specialties ranging from fine hardwood veneer door panels and entrances to garden gazebos. Indicative of those early days, Hartmann-Sanders advertised "factory showrooms" on Elston Avenue in Chicago and on Park Avenue in New York. Anxious to spread the word about the fine wood products and the unique Koll Lock Joint, early Hartmann-Sanders ads appeared, not only in architectural journals, but even in major consumer publications like National Geographic.
