PENETRON Takes the Plunge at Cumming Aquatic Center

The summer season at the Cumming Aquatic Center in Cumming, Georgia, kicked off a month ago. This project was an 18-month construction effort for a state-of-the-art aquatic facility that features PENETRON crystalline technology throughout.

The Cumming Aquatic Center is a modern aquatic facility with two indoor pools – a 50-meter competition pool and a 25-yard instructional pool – and an outdoor leisure pool that features a slide, lazy river, and play structures for children. The facility hosts a number of swim and diving teams during the year; five different Forsyth County high schools also call the Aquatic Center home during the fall season.

Resisting Water Under Pressure

“The Cumming Aquatic Center features large concrete structures that must hold massive amounts of water – a classic PENETRON project,” says Christopher Chen, Director of The PENETRON Group. “Our high performance solution has proven to provide superior performance in resisting water under pressure. These pools are absolutely waterproof.”

As described in “Report on Chemical Admixtures for Concrete” published by the American Concrete Institute (ACI), permeability-reducing admixtures for hydrostatic conditions (PRAHs), i.e. crystalline admixtures like PENETRON ADMIX, resist water penetration against hydrostatic pressure and have proven to be the most effective PRAH products with clear advantages over hydrophobic materials based on other mechanisms or ingredients. They are also able to bridge cracks formed by thermal or mechanical movement.

Soluble Bags – Quick and Easy

The PENETRON team worked with the general contractor and concrete suppliers from the beginning of the project to provide an optimal solution for a facility that would meet current and future needs. PENETRON ADMIX was used in pre-measured soluble bags to treat all the concrete pool structures. The soluble bags ensured accurate and easy application for mixing of the concrete batches during the construction.

“Over the years, pools, aquariums and aquatic facilities have become something of a specialty for PENETRON,” adds Chen. “Projects like the Cumming Aquatic Center deliver a water-tight argument for our technology.”

The PENETRON Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives and distribution channels.
