Over 80 of Howe Green’s 7500 Series Medium Duty Stainless Steel Floor Access Covers have been specified by architect Chapman Taylor LLP for the Westgate Oxford development. The floor covers provide access to essential services concealed under the flooring.

Westgate Oxford replaces the original center that was designed by Douglas Murray and built by Taylor Woodrow in 1970-1972. Landsec and The Crown Estate formed a joint venture, the Westgate Oxford Alliance, to undertake the project. Laing O’Rourke began construction of the 800,000 sq. ft. center in spring 2015. The facility will consist of over 100 stores, 25 restaurants and cafes, a 5 screen boutique cinema and a public roof garden complete with cocktail bar.

There is no doubt that the recently opened center will attract vast crowds looking to experience all the premier shopping, eating and drinking destination has to offer.

A demanding environment requires a robust infrastructure. The Howe Green 7500 Series Floor Access Covers provide safe, easy access to underfloor services and high levels of performance for what will be a heavily trafficked pedestrian area. The 7500 Series can withstand up to a 5 ton pneumatic wheel loading and, as they are made of stainless steel, are resistant to rust and corrosion.

The 7500 Series Access Covers is Howe Green’s most popular cover with an established pedigree. It evolved from Howe Green’s 750 Series – the company’s first ever access cover, which was developed specifically for the retail sector in 1983.

The floor access covers are designed to be infilled with a floor finish to match the surrounding area. The covers have been installed throughout Westgate Oxford by specialist stone contractor Vetter UK. The covers have been infilled with various types of stone to blend seamlessly with the different hard flooring finishes used across multiple locations. The flush finish ensures the attractiveness of the flooring is not compromised and the risk of slip and trip hazards is reduced.

The 7500 Series Medium Duty Floor Access Covers are tamper resistant, meeting the requirement for a secure access solution, a necessity in such a public place.

The covers are easy to install and use. Removal of the covers for maintenance of services, or emergency repair, is a simple procedure using either lifting keys or with an Access Cover Skate.

The 7500 Series is available from stock in a range of sizes or can be custom made to order. For additional safety there is the option to have up to a 3 hour fire rating in line with BS 476: Part 20 1987. The covers can also be supplied double-sealed to meet the highest standards of hygiene and security.

The 7500 Series has been used in shopping centers and retail outlets across the world, including Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, Bluewater Shopping Center in Kent and the Mirdif City Centre Mall in Dubai.
